What were some of the downsides of the zcash sapling upgrade in 2018 October?

What were the zcash sapling downsides when the upgrade occuring for 2018 October? I read that all ztransactions need to be transparent in order to use this new upgrade and then one would need to make them private again? Or was this something else?
